Everything you need to know about taking admissions tests for UK universities.
There are various university admissions tests that you may need to take before you apply, and each university will decide which tests they’d like you to take for different degree courses.
We provide an overview of which subjects, courses and universities require such a test.
Admissions tests
These are the main admissions tests that you may require if you are applying to UK universities.
The CSAT is required for entry to Computer Science at Peterhouse or Trinity College, Cambridge. The relevant college will invite you to take the test if needed. You do not need to take it in advance of applying.
The ESAT is required for entry to a variety of Engineering and Science courses at Cambridge, Imperial and UCL.
The GAMSAT is part of the admissions requirements for a number of graduate entry medicine and courses in the UK.
Currently nine UK universities ask you to sit the LNAT in order to apply for Law.
The MSAT is required for entry to a number of allied health professional courses at Ulster University.
The University of Oxford have a range of their own tests that are specific for entry to a wide range of their courses.
The STEP is not generally taken before you apply. Instead it may be a condition of your offer for Maths at Cambridge, and a number of Maths relates courses at Warwick.
The TARA is required for entry to a variety of courses at UCL.
The TMUA is required for entry to a variety of maths, computing and economics courses at Cambridge, Imperial, LSE, Warwick, and UCL.
It is also optional for some courses at Durham, LSE and Warwick.
The UCAT is required for entry to just about all medicine and dentistry courses in the UK.
